More and more homeowners are beginning to tackle home remodeling projects themselves, especially thanks to Pinterest boards. While painting your own kitchen cabinets sounds like something that you can handle on your own, there are some things that many DIYers tend to fall prey to. Here are three mistakes you will want to ensure that you don’t make:
Mistake #1: You Forget to Sand the Cabinets.
Regardless of the condition of your cabinets, even if they are almost pristine, it is imperative that you sand them down. Otherwise, your new paint will not stick to them. You will want to select sandpaper that is around 150- to 200-grit and give the entire cabinet surface, including the doors and drawers, a quick buffing. You don’t have to sand all the way to the bare wood, as you are simply trying to get the surface to matte finish rather than a glossy finish.
Mistake #2: The Surface Isn’t Dust- and Debris-Free Prior to Painting.
Before you begin priming or painting, you need to make sure that you have thoroughly cleaned the entire kitchen cabinet surface. You don’t want any dust or debris left behind. If there is, then when you begin to paint your cabinets, you won’t have a pristine, smooth finish; instead, you will have a rough, gritty finish -- almost as if you painted over sand. In order to remedy it, you will have to sand it down and repaint it.
Mistake #3: You Fail to Prime the Cabinets.
Speaking of priming, this is a step that many people tend to skip, although it is a very important step. If you skip it, your cabinets will look fine at first, then a few months down the road (possibly even weeks), you will notice that there will be some areas that will start to bleed through the paint. It won’t be pretty, yet it could have all been preventable if you had used a stain-blocking primer.
